Facial Feminisation

This is a very specialised area of plastic surgery. It requires facial plastic surgery and maxillofacial surgery skills to provide a comprehensive management.

The object of treatment is to minimize the male "gender cues" which work to distinguish the male from the female.

To understand this you only have to consider the way the adolescent face changes at puberty. The female face undergoes the least transformation whereas the male face grows significantly. The brow grows forwards and the lower face grows downwards and forwards. The male face is longer and more prominent.

This explains why the most common operations are brow recontouring, rhinoplasty and jaw recontouring.

In addition the larynx is much larger in the male and the "Adams Apple" prominent.

These are the primary masculizing features together with facial hair and male pattern hairline.

However there are other features which can contribute to male appearance, such as large ears, small cheek bones and lower browline.

As we grow older the face ages and this can make any woman appear less feminine. Facial rejuvenation surgery such as facelift procedures can help the older transgender person.

Brian Musgrove has taken a special interest in this aspect of facial plastic surgery and his dual training in maxillofacial and plastic surgery has helped him become recognised as one of the foremost surgeons in this field.
